Intel10nmCPU再度延期推14nm+++WhiskeyLake继续Loop

相信经常到讨论区流连的朋友，都可能会听过不少声音指 Intel “挤牙膏”，相信许多人。不过挤牙膏还挤牙膏，也要有“货”挤得出来才行。

所指的就是 10nm 制程 Cannon Lake CPU，Intel 已多次延迟其预产期，最初目标是在 2016 年年中推出，然后因为研发过程举步维艰，所以延后到 2017 年年尾或 2018 年年头，之后再推到 2018 年年尾，一推再推，笔者也觉得自己写得很乱。不过最近 Intel 又在财务报表大会中“拖数”，说可能要延迟到 2019 年才推出，还要不肯定是上半年或是下半年……哎呀，14nm 又要继续狂 Loop，要变到 14nm+++ 啦。

Intel 去年九月在北京展示 10nm 制程的晶圆，但至今都仍未能大量生产 10nm Cannon Lake CPU。

今年推出 14nm+++ Whiskey Lake

Intel 14nm 制程其实都已有一段历史了，自从 2014 年就推出首代 14nm CPU 的 Broadwell 系列，然后 2015 年就发表 14nm 的 Skylake 系列。再在 2017 年年头加码推出 14nm+ 的 Kaby Lake，却挤不出 10nm 的 CPU，于是在 2017 年九月又再发表 14nm++ 的 Coffee Lake。

看见那么多加号，其实大家都知道 Intel 每两代一个循环的 Tick Tock 策略已荡然无存，教科书都应该删掉 Intel Tick Tock 的金招牌，改为最新的叫法：P.A.O. 策略，即制程（Process）+ 架构（Architecture）+ 提升时脉及修复 Bug 的优化阶段（Optimization），优化阶段会以“+”表示。

14nm++ 的 Coffee Lake 具备两个加号，代表它是第二阶段的 Optimization，而 Intel 因为今年挤不出 10nm，所以今年稍后会在家用市场推出 14nm Whiskey Lake CPU 弥补，Server 市场则会推出 Cascade Lake Xeon CPU。

按照上述逻辑，Whisky Lake 应是第三个 Optimization 阶段，称为“14nm+++”。希望 Intel 到 2019 年别再押后生产 10nm 啦，否则再多一点加号，就会变成回音效果，加加加加……（慢慢收细音量～

Intel 由过去的 Tick-Tock 策略转为 P.A.O.，先更新制程 nm（P），然后更新架构（A），再进行制程优化（O）。优化阶段次数会以加号表示，Whiskey Lake 则是 14nm+++，第三次优化。

10nm 制程困难重重

说回 10nm CPU 滞后的问题，Intel CEO Brian Krzanich 在财报大会中表示，他们已开始生产小批量的 10nm 芯片，并经已出货，惟良率不如理想，需要多点时间来改善品质，提升良品数量，减少瑕疵品，所以要把大量生产的日期押后至 2019 年。技术困难主要在于 10nm 制程的晶体管（Transistor）密度实在是太高，需要使用多重曝光技术（Multi Patterning），有时要把晶圆进行四重、五重、甚至六重曝光，才能蚀刻到某种“纹理”。

进行那么多次曝光，一来增加生产成本及时间，二来技术难度提高，良率自然较低，所以 Intel 那么久都挤不出 10nm Cannon Lake 了。不过究竟是 2019 年哪个月份才能交出 10nm CPU？Intel CEO 今次就戴上头盔，不肯落实日期：“我们会遏尽所能在 2019 年推出，但不会指明是上半年，还是下半年，一切都要视乎良率而定。”

“We continue to make progress on our 10-nanometer process. We are shipping in low volume and yields are improving, but the rate of improvement is slower than we anticipated. As a result, volume production is moving from the second half of 2018 into 2019. We understand the yield issues and have defined improvements for them, but they will take time to implement and qualify. We have leadership products on the roadmap that continue to take advantage of 14-nanometer, with Whiskey Lake for clients and Cascade Lake for the data center coming later this year.”

“We are going to start that ramp as soon as we think the yields are in line, so I said 2019,” Mr. Krzanich noted. “We did not say first or second half, but we will do it as quickly as we can, based on the yield.”
